What Is The Standard Closet Size?

A dream closet is a perfect blend of function and style. Whether it is a small reach-in closet or a sprawling walk-in, it must be perfectly tailored to your needs.

While you can personalize many aspects of a closet, some standard dimensions can help you build a solid framework. This article will look at the dimensions of different types of closets that are standard across the industry.

1. Reach-in closets

Reach-in closets are the most commonly used type of closet and can be used as a clothes closet or even as a pantry. As the term suggests, you have to reach into the closet without stepping in to get items.

Ideally, the depth of the closet should be around 24 inches deep. For bulkier clothing items like winter coats, the closet depth can be as much as 28 inches.

Another factor to consider for your reach-in closet dimensions is the return walls. Imagine that you are standing in front of your closet, then the return walls will be on either side of you. Typically, they should be 12 inches deep or less.

2. Walk-in closets

Walk-in closets are usually at least 4 feet by 4 feet deep, but they certainly can be bigger! The storage accommodations of the closet design should allow for at least a 24-inch clear passage between shelves or closet space.

If you consider that the minimum depth required to hang clothes is up to 2 feet, having a 4-foot wide closet will only allow you to hang clothes on the back wall. A closet that is 6 feet wide or more can give you more space both on the side and back wall and still leave enough room in the center of the closet. If your closet has a greater depth than 10 feet, you can even have an island or seating inside the closet.

3. Pull-out drawers and shelves

For those of us who like to organize our closets neatly, drawers are a must. You can even opt for pull-out baskets that help you keep things in order. They are usually available in standard widths that range from 18 inches to 30 inches.

The drawers should have the standard 14-inch closet panels. One thing to keep in mind when positioning the drawers of baskets is that there should be enough space to open them without hitting the door. Baskets usually extend about 26 inches from the back wall, while drawers need an extra 1/2 inch due to their handle.

For more storage space for items that you don't need every day, like pillows, sheets, or bulky shoes, you can also opt for shelves. The upper shelf should be about 84 inches above the floor and about 16 inches deep for lighter items. For bulkier items, the rule of thumb is to allow for a 24-inch depth. The idea is that the items should not hang outside the shelf.

4. Hanging rods

The hanging rods are another factor to consider for the closet dimensions for hanging clothes. The standard closet rod can be of three lengths- short, medium, and long.

A short rod is perfect for dress shirts, blouses, or light coats. Usually, the rod would be placed about 42 inches above the floor. If you have two rods, then one of them is placed 84 inches above the floor.

A medium-hang rod is usually placed about 50-52 inches above the floor. It is perfect for pants or long skirts. Long-hang rods are placed about 64 inches to 68 inches above the floor. These are perfect for those long gowns and overcoats.

Bottomline

Getting the standard dimensions suitable for your closet can help you create beautiful and functional storage spaces. No matter the size, ensure that you take care of each drawer and rod as you design your closet.

It helps you avoid daily annoyances like a knob hitting the door or the inconvenience of a rod that is too low for your clothes. So, what are you waiting for? Start designing your dream closet today!
